Moflash Invests over £250,000 in a New SMT Production Line
Moflash Signalling has invested over £250,000 in a new, fully automated production line for printed circuit boards. At its heart, a Mycronic MY300LX pick and place machine places the components. As a result, our Birmingham factory gains capacity, efficiency, accuracy and placement speed.

What is an SMT pick and place line?
SMT stands for surface mount technology. With SMT, electronic components sit directly on the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB). A pick and place machine then takes each component from its reel and places it on the board with great precision.
So, an automated line can build complex boards quickly, while keeping every placement consistent.
What the Mycronic MY300LX means for our customers
First, the new line gives us significant extra capacity. In addition, it improves efficiency, accuracy and placement speed. As a result, we can build the circuit boards inside our beacons and sounders faster, here in Birmingham.
In practice, the MY300LX places up to 16,000 components per hour, or 13,800 per hour net under the IPC 9850 standard. In other words, each component takes just 0.25 seconds.
Moreover, keeping PCB production in-house gives us more control over quality and lead times.
The Harry Massey suite
The new line sits in the Harry Massey suite. Harry was our chief electronic engineer from 1998 to 2016. During that time, he was responsible for a number of the circuit boards used in the Moflash beacon ranges.

Naming the suite after Harry is our way of thanking him for his work. Moreover, it reminds our team that Moflash has designed its own electronics in Birmingham for many years.
